Stevie was a puppy mill dog I rescued 12 years ago, when she was a tiny baby. Puppy mill dogs are notoriously unhealthy. In fact, my vet encouraged me not to let her have puppies because we did not know her lineage. Despite the statistics, and contrary to the fact that a boxer's lifespan is 8-10 years, Stevie (and Baxter) lived until 12 years of age.
I'm very proud that neither of them were ever touched in anger, that they had a life better than most people and that I loved them dearly. I loved Baxter as the rambuncious boy he was. Stevie crawled right into my heart and soul the first day I met her.
I am feeling very sad and miss her terribly, but I'm glad I was able to put my feelings for her aside and allow release her from the pain of a 12 year old body - legs that were wobbly and looking more painful everyday.
Forgive me for my indulgence, but if you've had a dog, you will surely understand. God speed Stevie. My prayer for you is that you are quickly reincarnated and born into a family that can handle the enormous amount of love you have and freely give. Thank you for loving me unconditionally for 12 years. You are always in my heart.
