RULE: Don't eat anyting your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.
Great grandma never heard of 'gogurt', those little cups of yogurt mixed with sugary, dried fruit, that kids take to school. She never heard of Fruit Loops, whose chemical ingredients change the color of the milk in your bowl. And she certainly never heard of "coffee whiteners", so called because, in good conscience, the manufacturers can't call them 'creamers'.
Great grandma bought and ate foods that were grown in gardens or on local farms, not food processed in giant factories and mixed with chemicals to make them look better, taste better or last longer. You wouldn't eat a teaspoon of formaldehyde or formic acid. Then why would you want them added to your food, which many companies do. and why would you eat something, knowing it contained these two chemicals, and, more often than not, even more additives.
This morning I saw a discussion with Dr. Oz, who figured out that there is 'too much arsenic' in apple juice - the healthy juice we give to our children. IThe participants talked about how the levels of arsenic were not near the danger zone and how organic arsenic was better than non-organic. But in the ten minute discussion I didn't hear one interviewer ask, "Why do they put arsenic into our apple juice?"
A recent study showed the United States comes in 28th in longevity, only ahead of Mexico and Estonia. Could it be that what we are ingesting has something to do with it?
